Why Montreal? |
|
| No doubt about it, the time is ripe for IETM to come to Montreal — for more than one reason: |
Montreal is a cultural metropolis [-]
It is the Canadian city with the highest proportion of artists in its population, artists whose powerful and original works have made them known outside the country. These artists are among IETM’s Canadian members; to discover them, click here.
This year, besides IETM Montréal 2007 and Festival TransAmériques, the city will host Montreal, cultural metropolis – Rendez-vous November 2007 and the 2nd États généraux du théâtre, as well as the 5th edition of the Biennale de Montréal (Montreal’s contemporary art biennial), not to mention the prestigious annual Jazz, Just For Laughs, and HighLights festivals. IETM Montréal 2007 participants will converge in the city’s cultural heart---the performing arts hub, where over 30 halls and theatres, major art galleries and museums, and many alternative cultural venues are situated; the large international festivals are also held in this area.
Montreal in springtime: a true cultural warming! [-]
Forget about the tourist lure of our underground city, designed for winter temperatures or for shopping. In Montreal in springtime, the action is outdoors. Under the sun in the sidewalk cafés, on the bicycle paths or on Mount Royal, at the Old Port, and in the parks, spring is an unparalleled explosion of joy! This exuberance was one of the sources of inspiration in the choice of IETM Montréal 2007’s Cultural Warming theme.
Montreal is an island [-]
...in a Quebec which is also an island, with its 8 million French-speakers surrounded by 330 million English-speakers. As the world’s second French-language metropolis, enriched by a bilingual tradition and a strong multicultural component, Montreal has fused its North-American essence with the European art of living. The city is a fascinating doorway to a North America that is more complex than it might seem.
Montreal is a gourmet’s dream! [-]
With Montrealers’ taste buds open to the world, the city offers a gastronomical experience renowned for eclectic inventiveness. Many delightful suggestions will be made to IETM Montréal 2007 participants.
Montreal is a kaleidoscope [-]
“Ugly and dynamic like Manchester, dreamy and nostalgic like Lisbon, haunted, like Berlin, by its past and its internal fractures, divided, like Istanbul, by an imaginary Bosphorus, propelled, like Madrid in the 1980s, by a perpetual social, political, and cultural effervescence, Montreal is a kaleidoscope,” writes Stéphane Lépine in the seventh edition of Montréal Cultures, published by the association Culture Montréal. For this issue, eleven writers of all ages and tendencies, tied to Montreal by intriguing “elective affinities,” were invited to present their unique takes on the city. Their texts (in French, some in English) can be found here.
